What work is done in CA articleship

Interesting question, it's reasonable to say that articleship is the most important stage in the travel of the CA course. The chartered accountancy course requires the students to complete 3 decades of practical training that is actually only 2.5 years due to the exam leaves which you get. I can not emphasize enough about the importance of these 2.5 years because those years will shape you up to function as professional that you are likely to become in the real world. You'll discover a great deal of new work and make a lot of contacts in your specialist field. You'll certainly make new friends and most likely they are going to be your friends for life. Also, the CA community is enormous, and post-qualification you get to meet a great deal of professional and peers / specialists based on your articleship expertise and area of work. Now coming to your main question, What job is completed in CA articleship? This my friend, squarely depends on two factors: 1 ). Tier of this CA company where you work i.e. Top 50 CA firms, Mid-sized companies, or Little / Proprietary companies. 2. Year of your practice period i.e. if you're in the first year or next year or third year of your articleship training.

Top 50 CA companies have almost all kinds of assignments under their bag. Be it statutes, fundamental statutory audits of banks, taxation representations, tax consultancy, ROC compliances, due diligence, analysis or forensic audits, etc. and the list is endless. But, though they do possess this variety of work with them, articled assistants are involved just in auditing and tax advisory matters. Other duties are always managed with the professionals and other experts within the firm. Also, there is very little scope for shifting departments as you need to choose between auditing and taxation directly once you combine your articleship and you need to continue in that area for the subsequent 3 years. The advantage in joining the top 50s is that you have the feel for corporate civilization and innovative level of work expertise in that area as the top 500 listed companies are customers of those CA firms. The midsize firms are places where you learn nearly everything that you have in the CA program. Audits- Assess; Taxation matters- Assess; ROC compliances- Check; Preparation of Financial Statements- Check; if you are lucky enough, you may also get to perform on due diligence assignments.

The next thing, is the year of your practical training, so in the first year of your articleship you obtain basic work (which is very obvious since you've only landed in the arena of beasts:p) such as vouching, analyzing diary entries, compiling audit files and documentation, filling ITR forms, visiting tax sections for submission of documents, GST returns, etc.. In the next year, you're considered at par with a CA fresher (in terms of work skill) and you'll get delegated to top-notch professional work places like finalization of financial statements, due diligence assistant, helping in tax representation issues, assisting in fundamental statutory audits of financial and banking institutions, consultancy assignments, etc.. No need to mention that the significance of responsibility which comes with such assignments along with the expertise you acquire throughout the 3rd year of training. I dare not make any comparison among the 3 years because every year is equally significant but in my experience, I enjoyed the 2nd and the 3rd year because of the thrill and the huge assignments. Aside from all that, you get to attend a lot of seminars and training programs organized by different professional bodies and the ICAI, there's a great deal to understand during such classes as well. Your seniors along with your principal are also likely to be a great source of learning, particularly your seniors, they provide you with a lot of articleship hacks, be it MS excel, time management, and sometimes even stock trading tips XD. I mean, if I begin sharing my own experience, this response will run into webpages, so I want to leave a portion of surprise, not spoil your actual experience. Articleship isn't anything to be nervous about, it's fun in its own manner and in the exact same time, it gets you a versatile and responsible professional that is needed from the modern world world. Don't stress on your stipend too much because post qualification you'll be paid well and it'll be worth it.
